Israeli occupation forces, accompanied by personnel from the Civil Administration, raided Khirbet Umm al-Khair, east of Yatta, on Tuesday morning and handed residents a series of final demolition orders, in what locals fear is a prelude to a large-scale demolition campaign in the coming days.
Khirbet Umm al-Khair is one of the most repeatedly targeted Bedouin communities in Masafer Yatta, having endured more than 20 demolition operations since 2007, during which over 100 residential, agricultural, and public structures were destroyed — the most recent occurring in February 2025. The families of Umm al-Khair have already endured years of demolitions, settler attacks and land theft, all with the tacit backing of the Israeli government. And just months ago, beloved community leader and nonviolent activist Awdah Hathaleen was shot and killed by settler terrorist, Yinon Levy, already sanctioned by Canada in 2024. Canada has also sanctioned the Mount Hebron Fund which works closely in this area to advocate for Palestinian demolitions and expand illegal settlements. Canada has also sanctioned the founder of Regavim, (Knesset Member Betzalel Smotrich) an ultra nationalist-right wing settler expansion movement seeking to ethnically cleanse the West Bank.
These are not isolated incidents, but are being carried out by right wing fascist group Regavim, which is receiving charitable funding from Canada through Mizrachi Canada. Our tax revenue service is allowing these international crimes to occur with subsidized Canadian dollars. CBC’s Fifth Estate just dropped a bombshell report of Canada’s funding of demolitions and settler violence in Masafer Yatta, yet our government is allowing this funding stream to continue. They are in violation of international law and the CRA tax code.
