Release: Carney must use G7 to halt Israeli aggression on Iran

Immediate Release

The Iranian Canadian Congress, Just Peace Advocates and Canadian Foreign Policy Institute are calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to use this week’s G7 summit to pressure Israel to stop its attacks on Iran. On Friday, Israel launched a series of strikes that have killed dozens of Iranian civilians and destroyed significant infrastructure in that country.

“The Iranian Canadian Congress is calling on Mark Carney to use its position as host of the G7 to restrain Israel”, said Iranian Canadian Congress president Mona Ghassemi. “We are dismayed by Prime Minister Carney’s initial endorsement of Israeli violence in Iran.”

“If the G7 countries don’t stop enabling Israel’s violation of international law this conflict is likely to escalate into a broader regional war and considering global geopolitical tensions it’s not inconceivable that this could spiral into a world war”, noted Canadian Foreign Policy Institute fellow Yves Engler. “As host of the G7 at this time Mark Carney has a unique opportunity to deter such a scenario.”

“Israel is a nuclear armed state that isn’t a signatory to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. It has absolutely no standing to complain about an Iranian nuclear energy program”, added John Philpot of Just Peace Advocates.
