Donald Trump has instigated a criminal blockade of Venezuela. The US president also looks set to further escalate his violence against that country.

Canada must end its direct support for Donald Trump’s criminal blockade of Venezuela. In an act of piracy, the US navy recently seized a tanker carrying oil from Venezuela to Cuba and the US president announced a “total and complete blockade” of oil tankers the US has sanctioned (illegally) from entering and leaving Venezuela.
Canada has assisted Washington’s criminal siege, which is a major escalation in a decade long bid to suffocate Venezuela economically. Following the US, Ottawa has imposed a half dozen rounds of sanctions on Venezuelan officials since 2017. At the start of this year Ottawa instituted two new rounds of sanctions targeting about two dozen more Venezuelan officials. While ostensibly targeted at individuals, Canadian sanctions have deterred companies from doing business there and have helped legitimate more devastating US actions.
