A MEDIATOR’S EYE VIEW:  Essays on War, Peace & Shared Humanity

By Sally Campbell

Press Release

What does a mediator have to say about the state of our world today?  Plenty, it turns out. And why would the perspective of a white, female Canadian mediator be of value when it’s all so complicated? Because she spent over 35 years engaging with other people to help them work on their conflicts, across Canada. Because she herself is deeply immersed in Palestine solidarity activism, in addressing her own settler-colonial roots, in uncovering her own and her culture’s privilege and its systemic, institutionalized racism, and doing her own work to help create a world where everyone has a chance to survive and thrive. And she even seems to have fun in the process.

This well-researched book is chock full of easily accessible essays that inform fairly, give the reader much-needed context, explore hard questions, and offer practical ways to make a difference in turbulent times.

Born and raised in Vancouver BC, Sally’s activism awakened while living in the US during Vietnam War. Returning to Canada as a culture-blind lawyer in 1975, she began her re-education on Indigenous ways of being, and the learning continues. Mediation and restorative practices envision a worldview that works for everyone, and it is not hard to extrapolate from the interpersonal realm of conflict to a global perspective. This collection of essays helps us make sense of conflict––both local and global––and imagine ways forward.

“Beautifully written, fascinating, highly recommended.”
