FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Halifax, Nova Scotia, August 25, 2025— Organizations advocating for a free Palestine say Team Israel and the Davis Cup are not welcome in Halifax/Kjipuktuk.
“Going forward with this event normalizes Israel’s ongoing campaign of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza,” says Em Bailey, founding member of Palestine Solidarity Halifax. “In no reality should we be welcoming Israeli athletes for a tennis match, while Israel continues to bomb Gaza with impunity, killing Palestinians and obstructing the provision of lifesaving aid.”
To date, over 600 organizations and individuals including Labour for Palestine Halifax/Kjipuktuk, Palestine Solidarity Halifax, Nova Scotia Student Strike, Independent Jewish Voices Halifax, the Canadian BDS Coalition, and International BDS Allies, International Centre for Justice for Palestinians-Canada and Just Peace Advocates have signed an Open Letter calling on the International Tennis Federation, Tennis Canada, the Davis Cup, and all organizing bodies involved in the 2025 Davis Cup to immediately cancel the event set to take place in Halifax on September 12 and 13.
These calls for the Davis Cup match to be cancelled are in stark contrast to Halifax City Council’s August 19, 2025 decision to approve $50,000 in funding to host Israel at the Davis Cup.
Organizations in solidarity with Palestine are encouraging the public to speak out and tell their elected officials and event organizers to have the political foresight, maturity, and moral capacity to refuse what is business as usual.
