Over the last decade, the CRA has revoked over 30 charities that sent money to Israel in support of occupation and apartheid regime. Welcome to our series highlighting just some of these orgs.
The majority of this information is sourced from Howe & Sylvestre’s 2025 article “Burner Charities and Big Gifters“.
Jewish National Fund
The Background
Charitable purpose: Jewish settlement and Israeli development.
Registration / audit: Originally registered in 1967, an initial audit occurred in 1977.
Result: Revocation based on CRA’s investigation.
The Findings
The CRA found JNF sent millions of dollars to the Israeli organization Keren Kayemeth Leisrael (KKL), which engaged in non-charitable Israeli development projects.
- JNF used charitable donations to help construct “Canada Park,” built atop razed Palestinian villages.
- Numerous federal ministers, including former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, attended yearly JNF fundraising events.
- Israeli KKL was historically JNF Canada’s central recipient. KKL is Israel’s largest private landowner, and exclusively resells lands it has obtained to Jewish citizens.
- The CRA found that KKL had actively engaged in deceit of its donors, and in the surreptitious purchase of lands within the West Bank.
Conclusions
- JNF Canada’s charitable status was revoked in 2024. They appealed the decision, but the Federal Court dismissed this appeal later that year.
- After the loss of a second court appeal, JNF Canada announced a new charity: Friends of JNF Canada, through which they continue to collect tax-deductible funds.
