Check out Just Peace Advocates’ 2025 Annual Report

Collage of graphics for various current and past letter writing and other posts / campaigns

We are pleased to share our 2025 Annual Report. You can find the PDF version below, followed by a text only version.

During 2025, Just Peace Advocates

  • worked to bolster the Palestine solidarity movement across the country by challenging efforts to threaten, harass and legally bully activists into silence and inaction in Canada, providing advocacy support to students, grassroots activists and affected communities who stand for justice in Palestine
  • monitored incidents of suppression to expose trends in tactics to silence Palestine activism
  • continued participating in various networks including Arms Embargo Now, Scotiabank / Elbit divestment, Global Sanctions Coalition, FIFA Global Network, Canadian BDS Coalition & International BDS Allies, Sanctions Kill, Palestine Advocacy Network, No IHRA Global, and others

Other key updates from 2025 include

  • Updating our logo! When we started this work 7 years ago, we were lucky enough to have Taqi Spateen design our logo. Taqi is a Palestinian artist from Bethlehem who is known for his painting and graffiti art. The logo he designed included an olive tree, a sunbird, and a key which represents the right of return. Just Peace Advocates began solely focused on Palestine, but quickly expanded to include Kashmir. Our focus is on the realization of the self-determination of the people of Kashmir and Palestine. This new logo was designed by Abeir Hasan, a Palestinian graphic designer currently living in Gaza. We are beyond grateful to her for her care and dedication to creating something deeply meaningful, while actively trying to survive genocide. You can read more about the meaning behind our new logo on our website
  • Developing a resource and action hub on Canadian complicity in Israel’s genocide in Palestine, as well as the broader colonization of Palestine. This page is meant to act as a resource and connection point for folks looking for research, advocacy opportunities, and actions. Much of this information is pulled from our analysis of Canada’s “risk of complicity” sent to Senator Woo.
  • Creating a Kashmir Resource page to highlight and share key materials related to the occupation of Kashmir. India not only illegally occupies Kashmir but also has annexed and colonized the territory. The processes of occupation, annexation, and colonization are ongoing. India subjects Kashmiri people to land grabs, evictions, incarceration, harassment, criminal intimidation, crackdowns on religious freedom, and physical violence by the Indian-occupation. This resource includes articles, books, journal papers, reports, op-eds, and more!

About us

Just Peace Advocates is an independent Canadian human rights organization working for a just peace based on respect for international law and human rights. Its work focuses particularly on realizing the right to self-determination of the Palestinian and Kashmiri peoples, whose rights have been violated for more than seven decades. Through research, monitoring, education, communication, and advocacy, the organization seeks to mobilize civil society and develop national and international networks to strengthen the accountability of governments and institutions, while protecting the rights of those who speak out for freedom, equity, and justice. JPA was formed in March 2018.

As a Canadian organization based in the imperial core, one of the ways we show active solidarity is by holding our government accountable for its complicity in occupation, apartheid, and genocide from Turtle Island, to Palestine, to Kashmir, and beyond.

Our Board of Directors includes Jonathan Kuttab (co-founder of Al-Haq and Nonviolence International), Ali Mallah (anti-war and community activist), John Philpot (international criminal defence attorney), and Karen Rodman (human rights advocate and JPA’s Executive Director).

A deeper dive into 2025!

  • In 2020, we released the first version of Palestinian Human Rights Issues in Canada: A Legal & Tactical Guide, with additional updates in 2021. This year we launched the third, newly updated version!
  • Over the last year and a half, since Israel escalated its “chronic, insidious genocide” in October 2023, Palestine advocacy has exponentially grown nationally and globally. This updated guide reflects recent events as well as new legal precedent. As activism for Palestinian human rights has increased, so have attempts at suppression, violence, targeting of pro-Palestinian activists. This guide is meant to continue to be a resource for those who join the fight for a Free Palestine.
  • We also created a quick “Know Your Rights” guide which outlines what to do if the police approach you and/or they try and search you or your property. The guide is available online and can be printed to share at protests, community events, or other gatherings.

Overview of our letter campaigns

  • Over 500,000 actions were taken by about 250,000 people. They reached approximately 5 million mailboxes and a total of 700 recipients. (Note the users and recipients are counted for each specific action, so some recipients received more than one action and some users sent more than one action).
  • Our main focus was government officials, in particular the Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, other Cabinet Ministers, and the CRA. We also sent letters to critics, Senators, diplomats, provincial / municipal government officials, parties, candidates, as well as universities, hospitals, media, school boards, sports bodies, churches, and other institutions.
  • We were fortunate to partner with many amazing organizations on these campaigns including: International Center for Justice for Palestine (ICJP) Canada, Hind Rajab Foundation (HRF), Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights (CLAIHR), Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR), Al-Haq, Canadian Foreign Policy Institute (CFPI), Palestinian Canadian Congress (PCC), Labour4Palestine, Independent Jewish Voices (IJV), SURJ Toronto, Canadian BDS Coaltion & International BDS Allies, Ontario Palestinian Rights Association (OPRA), Palestinian & Jewish Unity (PAJU), Eyewitness Gaza, Health workers Alliance for Palestine (HAP), Ottawa Healthcare Professionals for Palestine (OHCP4P), Ottawa Families Against APR, World Beyond War (WBW), CPSA London, Canada Palestine Association Vancouver, Al Awda, Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM) Toronto, and Writers Against War on Gaza (WAWOG) Toronto.

Canada to Israel Charity Pipeline

Canada’s military complicity

  • Various actions including calling on Canada to end its military mission assisting the Israeli occupation in support of the US effort to build a Palestinian Authority Security Force and demanding an end to tax subsidies for an Israeli soldier competition in Whistler-Vancouver.
  • Joined over 230 other organizations in demanding an end to our governments’ production of F-35 jets.
  • Supported the Mask off Maersk Global Day of Action in March.
  • Together with CFPI and World Beyond War, we called on the Canadian government to cancel the F-35 fighter jet contract which would see Canada paying $19 billion for 88 F-35’s. Spring Magazine highlighted this action in an article by Yves Engler.
  • Supported the investigation into Canadians who have served in the Israeli military, and highlighted the “Find IDF Soldiers” database launched to identify individuals who have fought into the Israeli military.
  • In response to activists occupying then Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly’s campaign office, CFPI and JPA set up a letter campaign to demand Joly stop arming genocide.
  • Supported the Arms Embargo Now campaign, including the campaign’s release of two major reports.

Supporting grassroots advocacy across sectors

  • Called on the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) condemn attacks on healthcare.
  • In collaboration with OPRA and OFAA, called out anti-Palestinian racism from the Ottawa Carleton school board, resulting in over 17,000 letters sent.
  • Alongside OPRA, called on The Ottawa Hospital to cut ties with the Sheba Medical Center in Israel which is directly involved in the israeli military and demanded the Canadian government call on Israel to stop ethnically cleansing Masafer Yatta.
  • Supported the campaign from healthcare and union organizers to demand HOOPP divest from Israeli occupation and war crimes.
  • Alongside SURJ Toronto, demanded justice for Awdah Hathaleen, who was murdered by an Israeli settler in July, and justice for Umm al-Khair.
  • Supported grassroots organizers in Halifax who were refusing to allow Israeli sportswashing at the Davis Cup; collaborated with the Canadian BDS Coalition to call for an end to sportswashing at the Ottawa Equestrian tournament and a Red Card for Israel; also supported PAJU’s campaign to demand the Israel Premier Tech cycling team not be allowed to participate in the Grand Prix de Montreal. PAJU’s work was highlighted by CTV News in Montreal.
  • Called out the vindictive sanctions against Al-Haq, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights (Al Mezan), and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR). Together with ICJP Canada, Arab Canadian Lawyers Association (ACLA), and Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights (CLAIHR) we made a statement in solidarity with these Palestinian human rights organizations.
  • Supported the announcement from the Palestinian Canadian Congress, welcoming the Canadian Museum for Human Rights announcement that the exhibit Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present will open in June 2026.
  • Worked with Irish Sport for Palestine and Scottish Sport for Palestine to announce an upcoming submission to the ICC accusing the Presidents of FIFA and UEFA of aiding in war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied Palestinian territory. Edge of Sports covered this “historic” action.
  • Supported the Boycott Indigo Kids campaign, including analyzing the Schwartz & Reisman Foundation and HESEG Foundation’s 2024 tax filings.

Protect Palestinian Children Now

  • Protect Palestinian Children Now (PPCN) is a follow-up to Defense for Palestinian Children International’s (DCIP) No Way to Treat a Child 2018 campaign.
  • Provided resources for local groups to use in their advocacy efforts. You can ask your MP to endorse this campaign.
  • Prior to the election call, 13 MPs had endorsed the PPCN campaign. During the election, 121 MP candidates supported PPCN. Along with endorsing the campaign, some MPs and candidates provided additional statements about their support for PPCN.
  • As of December 2025, there are 6 current MPs endorsing the PPCN campaign.
  • A total of 122 organizations have endorsed this campaign from 12 different countries (Canada, France, Sri Lanka, UK, US, Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, Palestine, Egypt, Argentina, and The Netherlands).
  • Despite many MP candidates endorsing the Vote Palestine campaign, the majority of those who were elected have failed to endorse the PPCN campaign. We have called on each of these individuals to take urgent action!

Canadian complicity: Divestment and sanctions

  • Organized and supported actions involving various companies including:
    • EPCOR, a utility company that started using water meter technology made by Arad Group, an Israeli water tech company with direct ties to the Israeli military and illegal settlements.
    • WSP, a consulting and engineering firm that participated in the Jerusalem Light Rail (JLR) and Tel-Aviv Jerusalem Fast Train, both of which cross into the occupied West Bank. They also built a massive bridge in occupied Kashmir. This work included a report with Al-Haq and Kashmir Law & Justice Project. WSP sold it’s “Israeli business” to a “local management team” called “WSP Consulting Engineers Israel Ltd.” This closure occurred as a result of the movement’s advocacy work. We continued to advocate for justice in the face of WSP’s crimes. Even if WSP has left Israel, they are responsible for addressing human rights violations. Therefore, unless they take further action, they have not done their due diligence. If WSP has in fact stopped their occupation projects, they must provide remedies now. WSP’s role in occupied Kashmir and JPA / Al-Haq’s work was featured on Rabble.ca.
  • Continued our work in analyzing various investments to identify pensions, banks, and other canadian institutions investing in companies complicit in Israel’s genocide, apartheid, and occupation. We found that:
    • CDPQ holds $27.4 billion of complicit investments which represents an increase of 24%, or $5.3 billion, from 2024 (analysis done alongside Coalition du Québec URGENCE Palestine). This gained media coverage in Quebec, including in City News and La Presse.
    • Big 5” Canadian banks holds over $132 billion USD of complicit investments.
    • CPPIB, the Canadian national social insurance plan, holds $27 billion of complicit investments.
    • 7 major public pensions hold over $16 billion USD of complicit investments.
    • UPP and Fonds hold more than $1 billion of complicit investments.
  • Collaborated with PYM, No Arms in the Arts, World Beyond War, and other orgs on holding Scotiabank accountable for its complicit investments, particularly their massive holding in Elbit Systems. In June, Canadians protested at over 50 Scotiabank locations — this was covered in the media.
  • Canada sanctioned two senior Israeli government ministers — Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvi. The move follows recommendations made by IJV, JPA, and academic Miles Howe in an October 2024 report identifying eight key targets for Canadian sanctions related to Israeli settler violence and the ongoing colonization of the occupied West Bank.
  • In From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, Francesca Albanese, indicted corporate entities for their role in furthering Israel’s occupation and genocide. This report implicated countless Canadian institutions who are supporting and/or profiting from Israel’s crimes – therefore, making them liable for international crimes themselves. Specifically, SR Albanese included the CDPQ and cited the Coalition du Québec URGENCE Palestine and JPA’s report.
  • Hosted a webinar on how to start and conduct a divestment campaign with organizers from Retired Teachers Divest, Queers for Palestine Toronto, No Arms in the Arts, and the Coalition du Québec URGENCE Palestine.
  • Joined the Global Sanctions Coalition as one of the lead organizing groups, to present various sanctions packages related to Israel’s occupation, apartheid, and genocide. Supported two submissions, one focused on the World Zionist Organization and another focused on construction entities facilitating the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Gaza.
  • Highlighted the failure of the Canadian government in addressing India’s international legal violations in occupied Kashmir.
  • Together with Al-Haq, we further exposed Canada’s complicity in supporting the ‘Israeli’ alcohol industry through the importation and sale of apartheid products.
